Muhammadu Sanusi II, who was removed from his position as the Emir of Kano four years ago, has been reinstated by Governor Abba Yusuf.
Governor Yusuf announced this decision on Thursday after signing the Kano State Emirate Council (Repeal) Bill 2024 into law.
“With the full support of the kingmakers, I have approved the reappointment of Malam Sanusi Lamido,” Yusuf stated.
The new law replaces the Kano State Emirates Council Law of 2019 and dissolves the emirate councils established by former Governor Abdullahi Ganduje.
In December 2019, Ganduje had created the additional emirates of Karaye, Bichi, Rano, and Gaya, alongside the Kano emirate.
Deputy Speaker Muhammad Butu explained that repealing the law would restore Kano’s former prestige, as dividing the Kano emirate into five had diminished the state’s capacity and dignity at the national level.
“This bill completely abolishes the establishment of the five new emirates in the state and reverts to the former status of a single Emir in Kano, a tradition we have followed since the Jihad of Shehu Usman Dan Fodio,” said Majority Leader Lawal Hussaini Chediyar Yan Gurasa after the repeal was passed on Thursday.
“The creation of the new emirates only caused division among the people of Kano. The unity that existed for thousands of years was disrupted. We are now returning to our historical roots: one Kano, one people, one Emir,” emphasized Yan Gurasa.
